Tips for Safe Physical Activity for Seniors

By Frank LaManna, Exercise Physiologist, Bowling Green Parks & Recreation

Physical activity is good for your heath at every age.  If you have never been active, it's not too late!  Regular physical activity daily can improve your strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and agility, increase cardiovascular and life expectancy, and in general, help to make your daily skills/routine that much more pleasurable.

Physical Activity is anything that will get you up and moving!  Walking, exercising, jogging, riding a bike, gardening, even housework/chores are good forms of physical activity.

 * If you have been inactive for a while, check with your Doctor prior to beginning a workout routine.

 * Begin and end your day with 5 minutes of stretching.

 * When watching TV, use the commercials as a physical activity break and perform some type of physical activity, like jogging in place, or marching, etc.

 * Park further away in parking lots rather then taking the closest parking spot.

 * If possible, use the stairs instead of an elevator

 * Try to walk at least 15 minutes a day, three days a week or more.

 * When traveling, take breaks and use the rest stops (if in a car) and do 5 minutes of physical activity such as stretching, walking, marching in place, etc.

Always remember to drink plenty of water and stop the activity if you feel pain.
