Fructose Industry on the Defensive!

Search for:

The fructose industry, like its parent the tobacco industry, is starting to sense that the truth is coming out about the dangers of eating fructose. Ads are appearing on TV touting the "safety" of fructose. These are reminiscent of ads in the 50's where fake doctors pretended to endorse cigarettes as a healthy product. Now the corn syrup manufacturers are mailing out a list of ten "myths" about high fructose corn syrup. Every so-called myth is an obvious attempt to obscure the truth.

[ see the list, and the truth about each so-called myth.... ]

Runners pose by transition area
The 2008 Kids Try-Athlon was held Sept 6th at Preston Miller Park near the Sims Aquatic Center. Perfect weather greeted about 80 children who swam, biked and ran for ribbons and medals.  Many thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors.

Fructose Found to be a Major Culprit in Obesity
New research has turned obesity science on its head! The old adage of "energy in" equals "energy out" has been disproved. Much of the obesity epidemic is actually caused by poisoning of the leptin-hypothalamic feedback system in the brain by high fructose/ low fiber diet. This causes the body to store too much energy as fat, and makes it unavailable to use for activity. Dr Rick Voakes gave a talk on this subject at the annual Obesity Forum, Sept 2, 2008. You may download his power point slides (below).

Burger King Misses the Mark
Burger King launched a new menu with so-called healthy meals for kids, but totally missed the mark by making them low fat but high in fructose. According to a 5-27-09 UPI release: "
The three new meals include either a single hamburger or a two-pack of bite-sized "shots" served with apples cut to resemble french fries, low-fat caramel dipping sauce and calcium-fortified apple juice; or a four-piece, reduced-sodium chicken tenders meal served with the apple fries, low-fat caramel dipping sauce and fat-free milk." Apple juice and caramel sauce are both high in fructose, and should not be a regular part of any healthy child's diet.

New Book Puts It All Together!
A new book by Dr Miriam Vos puts all the latest scientific knowledge about healthy foods into a practical kids' guide for living. The book is aimed at all healthy children to keep them at a healthy weight for life. Unfortunately, the publisher insisted on an eye-catching title, so try to disregard the title: "The  No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids".

New Project Proposed for the HWK Coalition: Fructose Education
With the mounting evidence that fructose is a major cause of obesity, it is imperative that we educate the public about this health hazard. There are many parallels with the discovery of tobacco-related diseases.

Smart Bites Project Funded by IOM
The Institutes of Medicine has funded a $30,000 project to teach middle and high school students to make healthy food choices when eating out. The Smart Bites Project has provided all City and County students in 7th to 12th grade with a card to "swipe" at participating restaurants. Making a healthy food choice allows a "swipe" on your card which enters you in a drawing for prizes each month. All students were also provided with the Smart Bites booklet, explaining the "Go, Slow, and Whoa" food groups, and exactly which healthy food choices are available at each of 39 different restaurants in Bowling Green.

Limit Setting Helps Parents Control their Children's Food Intake
A parent wants to be a friend to their child, yet giving in to his demands, and not setting limits, will make a child out of control. This applies to food intake, as well as all other aspects of that child's behavior and development.              [more...]

Our Mission
We hope to greatly reduce the problem of overweight through preventive measures in the following areas:
(1) Work with schools to improve nutrition teaching and to improve the nutritional quality of foods available to children while at school. Increase the opportunities for physical activity in schools.
(2) Train physicians to identify and treat overweight in their patients. Provide resources for them to educate  their patients about prevention, and treat those who are already affected.
(3) Make the public aware of the problem of overweight so that parents can recognize it at an early stage in their own children. Make the public aware of the serious health hazards resulting from overweight, and the options available to treat overweight.
(4) Influence the local and state legislatures to bring about laws which favor the reduction of overweight in children, and promote cultural changes that allow children to maintain a healthy weight.
(5) We also hope to guide and improve existing overweight treatment facilities within the community, improve access and availability of exercise and fitness resources within the community, and to set an example for treatment facilities everywhere.
