Sugar Free Tips
Never Drink Sugar
Water and low fat milk are the best things for kids (and adults!) to drink. Many of us are used to drinking sweet beverages like sodas and juices, but these are loaded with harmful fructose. An easy solution is to substitute sugar-free sweet drinks, such as Crystal Light, diet sodas, and sugar-free Koolaid. Sweet tea can be made with sugar-free sweetener, such as Splenda or Sweet'N'Low. There is no excuse to EVER drink sugar again!
Sugar-Free Pancake Syrup?
Yes! Log Cabin, Maple Grove and Smuckers. Now even Mrs Buttersworth! Be sure to get only syrup that says "Sugar-Free".
Jams and Jellies
Ordinary Jams and jellies are loaded with fructose, but many groceries carry Smuckers or Polaner Sugar Free jams and jellies. Some flavors taste a bit more tart, but very tasty. There are several flavors available.
"Low Fat" Treats Might Mean "High Sugar" Treats
During the last several years most nutritionists have pushed for diets that are lower in fat. Many foods have been marketed to take advantage of the trend towards low fat diets, but this has usually meant increased amounts of sugars to keep the foods palatable. This is a very unhealthy trade-off, since the fructose is much more dangerous, and increases the unhealthy fats in your body, like triglycerides and free fatty acids. It's much more important to have a low sugar diet than a low fat diet.
For example, regular Hidden Valley ranch dressing has 1 gram of sugar, but Hidden Valley fat free has 3 grams, a three fold increase! Many people feel that fat free is healthy so they pile on the dressing, and it's easy to get 3 or 4 tbsp, which would be over 10 grams of sugar!
